Meriaura Energy to implement a smart solar-based electricity and heat network for a new residential area in Skogby, Raasepori
Skogby Strand Ab has initiated a renewable energy investment program for a new residential area planned on the site of the old sawmill in Skogby. The self-sufficient electricity system, based on smart solar energy and batteries, as well as the district heating network, based on solar thermal energy and heat storage, will be provided by Meriaura Energy Oy and Rasol Oy.
The first phase, which will be implemented during spring 2025, includes a system with over 50 kWp PV solar power plant combined with a 100 kWh battery storage, which will supply energy to six existing consumption sites in the area, including industrial sites such as the port and a boat repair workshop. The smart control system optimizes the charging and discharging of the battery, anticipates energy needs, and adapts to electricity consumption fluctuations. The system can also operate in the reserve market to maintain the stability and balance of the electricity system. The system can be expanded to new residential buildings in the Skogby Strand area. “This order is a small step for the company, but a giant leap for the development of our new business area, the smart energy production and storage,” says Jussi Mälkiä, CEO of Meriaura Group.
Finland’s largest solar thermal plant and flexible heat storage
The energy system planned for Skogby Strand also includes a smart heat network connected to electricity grid. The complex will include Finland’s largest solar thermal plant, which will produce approximately 200 MWh of heat per year, a flexible heat pump plant that connects the electricity and heat networks, and a thermal storage that enables the production of smart heat with minimum emissions when it is most cost-effective and low-emission.
The value of the first phase of the investment is about 250,000 euros, and upon completion, the total investment is expected to be around 1.5 – 2 million euros.
“The new residential area to be implemented in Skogby is an innovative and modern example of how electricity and heat can be produced locally in a carbon-neutral, flexible, and decentralized manner,” says Antti Lilleberg, CEO of Meriaura Energy. “The energy self-sufficiency of residential areas meets the needs of the modern world, providing security, cost savings, and meeting carbon neutrality aspirations.”
